Good relationships with family and friends are at the centre of our world. Having people to share the highs and lows with can make life better, but relationships also take work.

The impact of having good relationships on our wellbeing has been particularly evident this past year with social distancing restrictions meaning we’ve been separated from our loved ones. It seems people have been reaching out more than ever. If we’ve learned anything from the last year it’s that showing kindness and compassion, for ourselves and others, is a huge part of what gives us our sense of wellbeing and belonging.

Many of us have will have spent a lot of time with those we live with during the pandemic, which may have been stressful and a true test of patience and compassion. Sometimes, it's only when challenges surface that we uncover problems in our relationships. That's why knowing when and how to get support is important.

That's why we’re partnered with Relate, the UK's leading relationships charity to provide relationship support to past and present ICAEW members, ACA students, ICAEW staff and their close family members. Relate supports over 2 million people each year by providing relationship counselling, family counselling, mediation, children and young people’s counselling and sex therapy.

if you’re a beneficiary of CABA, you and your family can access Relate's services for free. All you need to do is contact CABA and we’ll put you in touch with a trained Relate consultant. The consultant will ask a bit about why you got in touch and will offer advice on how Relate can best help. Usually, that means setting up a course of one-hour counselling sessions, which will take place over the phone or via video call at this time.

People attend relationship counselling for all sorts of reasons. Relate counsellors see people in many different situations and are never judgemental. It might be a partner who's had an affair, a teenager's behaviour that's causing havoc for the whole family, or a couple who want to reconnect after the kids have flown the nest. From dealing with mental health issues or bereavement, to feeling lonely or wanting a better sex life - Relate can help.

Relate see people on their own, as a couple or as a family. It really depends on what's going on for you and those you love. Counselling sessions are confidential and they would never disclose any details unless they believed someone was at risk of serious harm. Crucially, Relate know that what they do works. For example, 91% of their clients said that their communication was better after attending adult relationship counselling and 84% felt able to cope with any difficulties they might face in the future. If you need support with your relationships, contact CABA today.
