We've also put together some useful tips to help you save money, and keep warm and safe this winter.
Staying warm
Activity keeps you fit and warm. Try not to sit still. Get up and make yourself a warm
drink, do a little housework or a few chores every hour. If walking is difficult, chair-based exercises will help.
Eat well at least one hot meal, plenty of hot drinks and five portions of fruit and vegetables each day.
Layer your clothes several thin layers keep you warmer than a single thick one, as they trap warm air. Snuggle up under a shawl or a throw for added warmth when sitting.
Saving money
Check with your energy provider/s that you are on their most cost effective tariff and compare them to others.
Turn your thermostat down just 1°C could cut your heating bills by up to 10%. (Energy Savings Trust).
Use energy saving lightbulbs one can save around £55 over the lifetime of the bulb (Energy Savings Trust).
Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows.
Turn appliances off don’t leave them on standby
Staying safe
Stock up your kitchen in case you cannot go out, or others cannot reach you for a couple of days.
Wrap up well wear gloves, a hat and wrap a scarf around your face when going out. Choose boots or shoes with non slip soles.
Carry a blanket, shovel and flask in your car.
Grit and salt your path/driveway to keep it clear of snow and ice, if you can. if you are fit and able, offer to do it for someone who can’t!
Service your boiler every year and an electric blanket at least every three years.
Know contact numbers for family, a friend or neighbours in case you need help. Tell them if you go away.
